Oil-based Lead Paint: Never Use Where People Sleep, Work or Study

Oil-based paint contains lead that is released into the air and breathed in, causing cough, cold, eye irritation and disease; water-based paint should be used instead.

What it does

To protect residents, employees and students from harmful lead.

Where

Bedrooms, doors, offices and schools

Samagri used

  • Water-based paint

How to do it

  1. 1Use water-based paint inside the house
  2. 2Never use oil-based paint in the bedroom where you sleep for 8 hours, whatever the interior designer recommends
  3. 3Avoid oil-based paint on doors, in offices and in school buildings where people spend 8 to 10 hours
  4. 4Avoid strong-smelling special adhesives; if used, spray desi cow urine on the furniture

Cautions

  • Oil-based paint is banned in many countries but still widely used in India
  • Lead in paint should stay below 90 ppm

Explanation and notes

While fresh paint dries, people feel uneasy, cough, catch cold and get burning, watering eyes; this is the lead in the air. Even a main door in an excellent location should not be painted with oil-based paint.
