Underground, copper is the best metal because copper and land both belong to Mars; it ionises the land and generates a current. Planet-wise metals are used when orienting to cosmic energy above ground, so a silver kalash goes above ground in the North-East.
Land heavy with metallic or black minerals carries more energy than most people can bear, so areas rich in surface minerals stay poor and troubled; minerals lying deep underground or bound with silicates are far less harmful.
The mirror is one of the eight mangal items (ashtamangal) and is considered the best of them; it drives away negative energy and reflects energy when placed in the right direction. It represents the water element and the Moon, so it belongs on the North or East wall.
Use one whole glass mirror rather than small pieces, keep every mirror at least two feet above the floor, and never use plastic mirror film in place of a mirror.
Square and rectangular mirrors are very good, but triangular and pointed-end mirrors are harmful, and mirrors cut into small pieces for scenery or glass temples (kaanch mandir) turn an auspicious item into an inauspicious one.
The North-West is the seat of the Moon and of Vayu (air). Its interior uses white and ivory, pearls, white stone and a little white marble, pictures of water creatures and the full Moon, and moon-loving plants.
The early morning sun, arriving at a particular angle at the main door, fills a correctly placed entrance with energy that keeps the house and its people alert for the whole day and night.
A mountain in the North or East of a site ruins everything, and land at the foot of a hill (talhati) should never be used for a house. Such land is to be refused even if it comes free.
Several popular fancy-vastu items are not recommended: aluminium wind chimes pollute the air, the laughing Buddha and bamboo flutes under beams are myths, pig figures make no sense, and idols showing only a face or a half-cut deity are wrong.
However wrongly a staircase is placed, it should not be broken and shifted, and no wall should be broken to make a new door; doing so creates serious trouble.
A factory built on a river front was washed away by floods twice before a Vastu check showed that the site itself was wrong; a factory should never be built on a river front.
The corners of a plot are its biggest sources of energy, and energy flows diagonally from corner to corner through the brahmasthan like a highway. Piling or filling a huge mass over a whole corner zone creates a serious defect.
A plot or house squeezed between two tall buildings on opposite sides, even South and North, gets neither balanced magnetic and gravitational force nor sun rays. Such a house wrecks every effort and should not be bought even if it is offered free.
A dug well in a wrong zone, such as the South-West, must not simply be filled up suddenly; it is closed through a proper method (vidhi), the vastu registry of a dug well. Closing it carelessly can increase the trouble.
Stairs, the main door, a locker, a pit, boring or dug well, a basement confined to the centre, a store room, a garage or a kitchen must not be built in the Brahmasthan. Each causes serious harm, from illness in the family to quarrels and ruin.
A transformer is fire, and the North is the water zone of opportunity, so a transformer there blocks earnings. In one factory a transformer correctly placed in the West-North-West was shifted at a cost of 5 lakh rupees to the exact North at N3-N4, and the plant ran at only 25 to 30 percent of capacity.
The main door is the face (mukh mandal) of the house and every door and window is a face; the centre of the top frame corresponds to the agya chakra between the eyebrows. A nail driven there damages it and the household suffers constant headaches.
A tijori or locker that is propped up with a wedge (teka) or is not at water level reduces the wealth in it to zero, because the gravitational force does not act on it.
Living above a bank is acceptable, but a flat whose toilet lies directly above the bank's safe or locker room, where the money is kept, ruins its residents financially.
The colour of a debilitated planet, or of the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house, should be left out of the home interior and not worn for important occasions.
A mirror deepens the surface it is on: on a wall it makes the space look extended, on the floor it creates a pit. Highly reflective tiles, marble or stone must not be used in the South to West zones or the Brahmasthan.
Nothing valuable or sacred should sit on the pishach bhoomi: never a tijori, court case or other important papers, a child's study table, a bed set directly against the wall, or a deity and home temple. Leaving even a 2 to 3 inch gap from the wall keeps an item off the pishach band.
The North is ruled by Kuber, its planet is Mercury (Budh), its gem is emerald (panna), its symbol is the gada (mace) and in the Vastu Purush it is the heart. A good North brings wealth, career, opportunities, jobs, rise and respect.
In the North, N3 brings sons and wealth, N4 (Bhallat) is the best of all 32 doors with windfall wealth, and N5 gives wealth with dharma and fame. N1, N2, N6, N7 and N8 bring suffering, enemies, family stress, faults in women and poverty.
North is Kuber's treasury: Kuber promises to keep the store full but asks for hard work, giving opportunities for work and business, so it is the zone of opportunity and money. Keep the North light, low and open, with water and greenery.
The North is the place of Kuber and is itself like a magnet: it attracts not only money and opportunities but any person, even a lost person, and any object, drawing in the energy of the 72 kalas of the Moon and the 72 kinds of human energy.
The North-East is ruled by Isha, its planet is Jupiter (Guru), the greatest of the planets, its gem is yellow sapphire (pukhraj), its symbol is the kalash and its vehicle the horse; in the Vastu Purush it is the head and brain. It gives true knowledge, prosperity and peace.
