Drawing room, office, puja room, conference room, underground water tank, borewell and a bedroom for elders suit the Shikhi pad. A main door, kitchen or toilet here harms the residents.
Doors should not be opened by vastu alone; if the person has a debilitated Sun in the birth chart, forcing open an E3 or E4 door is not appropriate.
For a new building the boundary gate is placed using the grid of the whole plot, while the main door and the devta pads of the house are marked on the grid of the constructed area, for example at E3 or E4.
E3 suits the main door, a library, a planning or meeting room, an office, a child's study and even a bedroom; a kitchen works only for an early breakfast, and a toilet cuts social and government support.
E4 suits an administration chamber, office, main door, drawing room, study and bedroom and gives both wealth and peace; a toilet here brings defamation, loss of wealth and disease.
E5 is the ideal zone for a bathroom and suits administration, a manager's chamber, a locker, planning, meeting and conference rooms and a good office; a door here brings anger and a toilet brings disgrace.
In Vedic vastu (not feng shui) the air element has a flag-like shape, green colour, North-West location and kansa (bell metal) as its metal; the main door, windows, balcony, garden, plants and floor-to-slab height represent it.
In the kundli chart the top (1st) house is East, the 4th house North, the 7th house West and the 10th house South, with the corners as the sub-directions; these directions stay fixed while rashis and planets move.
A lion represents the Sun; if the owner's Sun is debilitated, lion statues at the main door or in the house bring ruin instead of power.
The elephant represents Rahu, so elephant statues or hanging-elephant bandhanwar (toran) do not suit every home, especially where the family's Rahu is debilitated.
A triangle is the fire element's shape; a main gate built as a triangle for an owner of the water element turned a large factory into an NPA.
The house facing, main door and common areas are chosen from the grih swami's (owner's) kundli, while each member's bedroom and study are planned from that member's own kundli.
East is the Sun's direction that starts creation and connects people socially, politically and religiously, so it is the zone of association and politics. Keep it open and clean; obstructing the Sun here brings trouble to the house owner.
North is Kuber's treasury: Kuber promises to keep the store full but asks for hard work, giving opportunities for work and business, so it is the zone of opportunity and money. Keep the North light, low and open, with water and greenery.
The earth is tilted about 23 degrees toward the NE, so this corner receives the most energy; it is the zone of clarity. Keep it low and open, use it for water, study and worship, and keep here everything you want to charge or speed up.
In NNW the influence of Kuber's North spreads sideways and attraction is strongest, so it is the zone of sex and attraction. It is the best bedroom for a newly married couple and suits display and dressing.
NW brings prana and fresh air and pushes stale air out, so cross ventilation is a must; the teacher calls it the gateway (get-away) zone. It is a natural fridge for storing grain and the Moon's place, which makes it the ideal zone for the overhead tank.
SE is pure Agneya: from 9 am to 12 noon the young Sun's fire is strong enough to cook food, so this is the ideal kitchen zone and the zone of cash flow. Water, mirrors and money storage go wrong here.
From about 4 to 4:30 pm the Sun reaches SW and the energy begins to cool and stabilise the mind; it strengthens relationships and skills, motivates hard work and gives stability to every work. It suits bedroom, drawing room, tijori and heavy items, subject to Rahu-Ketu checks.
The Sun sets in the West but the effect falls on WNW, which brings tears, so Vedic vastu calls it the rudan kaksh (crying room); it is the zone of depression and low mood. It is the ideal place for a septic tank and suits waste and storage uses.
From 4:30 pm until sunset the Sun's rays turn cool and soothe the brain's neurons and glial cells, so WSW is the education zone and is very good for studying children. Most activities are allowed, but no fire, toilet or main door.
Rules to avoid in kitchen design: no south-facing door, no doorless or open kitchen, no central platform, no mirrors or water artifacts, no toilet on any of its six sides and no well, borewell or tank above or below.
A picture changes the mind, so a painting can create a dosh. A painting of a tree, mountain, river, road or pillar facing the main door acts as a dwar vedh, water scenes do not belong on South, West or SW walls, and mountain scenes do not belong on the North wall.
If the sleeping zone cannot be changed, changing the direction of the feet gives about 50 percent of the benefit. Feet towards North is best, West is second, East only for children and early risers, and South never.
Stairs must turn clockwise, have an odd number of risers, include landings and equal risers, arrive facing North or East, and have nothing harmful built beneath them.
Stairs are excellent in SSW (the heavier the better) and good to very good in South, SW, WSW, West, WNW and NW; they must never be in the NE zone, the Brahmasthan, the North or right in front of the main door.
Stairs represent Mercury (Budh), the planet that lifts people up and gives success in business; they join underground energy with cosmic energy. Wrongly placed stairs stall business, obstruct children's education and spoil relations with sisters, daughters and paternal aunts.
Stairs right in front of the main door invite accidents and mishaps, but stairs that start at least twice the door height away (14 feet for a 7 feet door) are not treated as facing the door.
The human body, imagined facing East, is built like the Vastu Purush Mandal, and the position of each body function shows where the matching part of a house belongs.
Four positions are forbidden for a toilet whatever the zone: the Brahmasthan, directly opposite the main door, directly opposite the kitchen and under the staircase.
